Diligence and consistent concentration on the moves of chess games exercise the mind. In fact, few games can come close to how greatly the brain can be exercised by playing chess.
Of course one can improve socially, by playing the royal game with other players. And chess is fun, so get involved with chess and encourage others to do the same.
